Henry Irving acting prompt-book, 1897 February 12.

The collection consists of one acting prompt-book, heavily annotated and corrected by actor and manager Henry Irving for his leading role as Napoleon in the play Madame Sans-Gene (written by Sardou and Moreau and adapted by Comyns). The book is an octave bound in green kidsking, somewhat worn, consisting of Folios (55)-99 as issued, Irving's part for Napoleon. The book is autographed "Henry Irving/Lyceum Theatre, 12 February '97" and presents an excellent source of Irving's acting methods.

Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905) was a British actor-manager. Born Feb. 6, 1838, in Keinton Mandeville, Somerset, Eng., he died Oct. 13, 1905, in Bradford, Yorkshire. Irving's original name was John Henry Brodribb. He achieved early success and began to play leading roles throughout London, often with Ellen Terry.
